Siberia's Softer Side

Updated: Feb 26, 2019

Let me show you a Siberia you haven't seen.

This is Siberia!

Welcome to The Softer Side. On this website I exhibit my photos from around the world. I use soft focus because I believe it encourages us to look beyond an image's physical aspects and into the soul of the subject. This post sets the stage for understanding my images from and experience in Siberia.

The Softer Side of Siberia When you think of Siberia what's the first thing that comes to mind? Snow? Howling wind? Hardened, hairy humans swaddled in bear skin? Let's examine another construct: Russia. What are you thinking now? Vodka, deep-throated voices, strong opinions, profound sorrow, unbendingly tough men, hard-working women, and a cold caution when meeting strangers?

The Siberia I saw belies these stereotypes, at least in the summer.

July in Topol'noye is a gentle month. It was almost like being in the middle of a cloud; July days carry a dreamy softness. No day is too hot or humid, no day is too cold. The air is fresh and flows freely. The water is clean and refreshing. Babushki (elderly women) roam the hillside collecting zemlyenika, tiny strawberries that they turn into bouquets, and jam. Children chase each other through the village on bicycles, and lanky teens take long walks on mountain roads.

"Even in Siberia there is happiness." - Anton Checkov

I have never met a warmer, more helpful people. The villagers laugh loudly and frequently. They know each other by name and temperament. They invite strangers to their community celebrations.

Given my experience, I think every American should visit Russia at least once in their lifetime.

Special thanks to Dr. Aleftina Tsvetkova and Dr. Anar Yizbaeva for their generous help during and after the research trip.

My trip was made possible by the American Friends of Russian Folklore. Their mission is to promote an understanding of Russian life and culture by helping Americans see and experience Russian folklife. Visit their blog to read about scholarships, expeditions, and their research.
